Opens in Caravaca Valcárcel sculpture 'The Pilgrim' as "a great reference for all visitors during the Holy Year" (22/03/2010)

The sculpture, a piece of seven feet tall in bronze, symbolizing the passing route for those who walk the Way of the Cross to reach the Holy City and win the Jubilee

The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, opened today in Caravaca de la Cruz's last sculpture that came out of the hands of the famous sculptor Antonio Campillo Murcia, who died last year.

The book 'The Pilgrim', Mediterranean Fund donated by the city of Caravaca to celebrate the Holy Year, representing an individual in full journey on a bike and has been placed on access to the esplanade of the basilica Santuario de la Santisima y Vera Cruz de Caravaca.

This sculpture, which will welcome all the pilgrims who come to the Holy City, "will become a great reference for these visitors, and, surely, will appear in the images from Caravaca traveling to other parts of Spain or world, "said the president.

'The Pilgrim', part two meters tall in bronze, symbolizes the journey that made people walk the Way of the Cross to reach the Holy City and win the Jubilee.

Caravaca held since Jan. 10 second-year jubilee and is experiencing a large influx of pilgrims from different parts of Spanish territory and other countries.

In the first three months, has doubled and the number of visitors compared to last year Jubilee celebration in 2003.

In addition, many more pilgrims who choose the city within walking distance through the Vera Cruz Road, especially along the Via Verde, an itinerary that has been conditioned, from Mula to Caravaca, using the former railway track linking the capital of the Region in the Northwest region.

The City Council has installed in Caravaca de la Vera Cruz Road a total of 50 directional signs and information in order to facilitate the arrival in the city to those who choose these routes of pilgrimage.

The indications, based on wooden poles and sheets of silk-screen arrow information are scattered throughout the main sections of the so-called Caminos de la Vera Cruz.

The signs are located on roads of the Apostle and Under Guadalentín, High Guadalentín, Altiplano, Andalucia and the Campo de San Juan, and in the towns of Archivel and the Incarnation.

The Community has also funded a variety of posters and signs with text and image sizes, defined as Signaling System Approved Tourist Road, which designate the municipality as a tourist attraction and historic cultural destination.

Is also expected to be inaugurated shortly hostel for pilgrims of 'The Plain', which may include a large number of groups that you will be arriving in the city of Caravaca for the coming months, taking advantage of the spring and summer.

Moreover, Caja Mediterráneo has also published two books on the Paths of Vera Cruz, which lists the seven routes from different parts of the Region of Murcia and surrounding regions lead to Caravaca de la Cruz, as well a few tips to know and enjoy the fifth Holy City, its history and rich heritage in the vast cultural and religious.
