The Department of Environment of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz has applied the treatment "red palm weevil" the palms of municipal parkland.

The treatment, which inció last January, called Endo, an alternative method mainly fisiosanitario has a preventive character.

Endotherapy works from the flow capacity of the sap of the tree, therefore considered the most effective, since the substances or products used go directly into the tree's vascular system, so that its action is rapid, persistent and environmentally clean.

Preventive treatment is carried out in several phases, from January to October, making an extra treatment to 20 palms especially vulnerable, as are those in the García-Esteller, Museum of the Party, the Loch Park Square Bulls or the Garden Doctor Robles.

The councilor responsible for the maintenance key parks and gardens, M ª Antonia Jorquera, explained that technicians special employment center "Ecojardín" periodically to apply the product through injectors or pegs in holes made in the troco.

Jorquera Alvarez added that there is provided a new performance schedule for 2014, which will begin next February.

Emergence of "Red Weevil"

In October last year, the Department of Environment confirmed the appearance of the first case of palm affected by the "red palm weevil" a private garden in the village.

From that moment, the action protocol marked by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water of the Autonomous Community was activated.

"The owners of palms must control the appearance of certain symptoms such as the decay of the central leaves, total plummeted and grizzly remains, as it may cause a risk to people and property by smashing the trunk," he recalled the Councillor for the Environment.

Since last year, those neighbors who own palms should communicate its existence to a census of all copies of private farms located in town, by completing a form available in the General Register of the City

The "Red Weevil" (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is a plague that affects the palms, mainly canary, date and washingtonias (in that order of preference), but can strike at any Palmácea.

Given the virulence with which has advanced this pest in the region, it is necessary to fight the same collaboration of the population.

This pest is a beetle, a beetle-like reddish iron oxide, which flies palm in palm attracted by the smell that cuts pruning the palm trees.
