The lamb has got segureño Designation of Origin (PDO).

The European Commission yesterday decided to approve this QA for segureña race and include it in the list of 1,200 foods covered by EU regulations.

The mayor, Domingo Aranda, has positively assessed this final approval by the European Union as it is an important for the livestock sector as a source of job creation and economic development momentum.

The segureño lamb that grows in parts of the city of Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz and other points of pronvincias Albacete, Almería, Granada and Jaen, is a breed of sheep fully adapted to life in the mountains of Segura and upland areas of the bank of that river.

In order to promote the breed and disseminate improvements thereon, the City of Caravaca de la Cruz and the Regional Sheep Breeders Association Seguereño (ARCOS) organized annually since 1991 Auction Competition Sheep Race Segureña in archivel.

The oil of the Aragonese Sierra del Moncayo, obtained from a unique blend of olive varieties, has been the other Spanish food than yesterday obtained the Protected Designation of Origin by the EU.

Sheep farming is of great importance to socio-economic status in the Northwest region, with a large census sheep bred a traditional production system rooted in the rural areas, as part of nature and therefore environmentally friendly.

The Regional Sheep Breeders Association Segureño (ARCOS) is formed by 60 farmers and 25,000 head of cattle.

In Murcia there are almost 600,000 head of cattle.

The segureña sheep is a breed characterized by its high hardiness and high production levels, which has helped maintain high levels of purity in the difficult environment in which operates, to which have not been adapted Spanish or other foreign breeds introduced.

It is a sheep meat production, production of a high quality lamb's own breed characteristics, production system and the environment in which it occurs.

Segura lamb meat is characterized by its pink color, juiciness and tender texture.

These qualities set it apart from other domestic and foreign sheep.
