The City Council increased the number of containers to collect used cooking oil (10/05/2011)

The City of Caravaca de la Cruz has increased the number of containers for collecting used cooking oil.

The Councillor for Environment, Antonia M ª Álvarez, reportedly have settled 9 containers which, being metal, they have the advantage of being placed in public, being more visible and accessible to citizens.

In total, the municipality has 30 containers of metal and plastic oil.

"Since 2008, which were launched in the town environmental campaign, we recycled over 3,000 gallons of oil from caravaqueños homes, according to data provided by the company managing this waste," remarked the mayor Alvarez Jorquera who pointed out that this campaign is framed in the Sixth Environmental Action Programme and the Agreement on the Strategic Plan of the Region of Murcia 2007-2013.

For the containers that are operating in schools, colleges and supermarkets Day, we now have those installed in Ciudad Jardin, Calle Miguel Espinosa, Elijah Arcos street, avenue de Los Andenes, Constitution Avenue, Avenida Juan Carlos I, Juan Square Paul II and Templars Square.

Thus, in the coming days will be installed in different parts of the hamlets of Archivel and Barranda.

With the installation of such containers are designed to prevent damage from domestic oil spills uncontrollably down the drain and that can be recycled for use by manufacturing biodiesel.

In this regard, Council Member for the Environment has stated that it is "a waste that normally settles to drain causing sewer blockages and odors in the pipes."

The power of oil pollution means increased costs of water treatment process and contamination of watersheds, aquifers and oceans, which interferes with the natural life and degrades the environment.

Also, if oil is poured to sink or toilet is facilitating the proliferation of organisms harmful to health.

By contrast, the recycling of cooking oil can eliminate highly polluting waste sewers, it facilitates the reuse of treated water and avoid clogging problems in the pipes.

It should also be noted that fats and oils offer a multitude of applications in the industrial sector, such as the manufacture of biodiesel, a fuel similar to diesel oil obtained which can be used for diesel engines in general.
