Sunday is celebrated in Caravaca a Day for the conservation of Lesser Kestrel (25/02/2016)

The Caralluma Association, in collaboration with the Department of Environment of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz, held this Sunday, February 28, a day of Conservation of the Lesser Kestrel.

This activity involves the installation of tiles-out, cleaning and decontamination dens nests such insectivorous species has in cottages in the cereals field Caravaca.

Participants in the conference will see the species Lesser Kestrel, which has come to the municipality of Caravaca some weeks in advance, and to participate in building nests for protected birds.

This event is framed in the plan of raising awareness and environmental education that the Department of the Environment, promoted throughout the year, and last January has already started with the day of ornithology, organized jointly with the bird banding group the Association for the Defense of Nature Caralluma and the Association of Southeast Naturalists.

Councillor for the Environment and Agriculture, Enrique Fuentes, recalled that "in the early eighties and started Caralluma activities for the conservation and recovery of the Lesser Kestrel, wintering in the south of the Sahara and reaches this area peninsula in late February. Their presence is beneficial for agriculture, since it feeds on insects such as the lobster- and small rodents, besides being a good biomarker of climate change. "

Currently, as noted Enrique Fuentes, "the species perishes to have stabilized, after being favored by such conservation initiatives, through which the species has recovered in municipalities in the Region of Murcia and neighboring Andalusia ".

The lesser kestrel can be considered the smallest of the falcons.

Until the middle of last century, it was a frequent resident of towers, cottages, houses, palaces and castles in regions dedicated to agriculture and ranching, where they could find abundant invertebrates that feed.

The transformations in the Spanish countryside in recent decades decreased their habitat and caused a sharp decline.

Quite similar to the kestrel aspect, the lesser is distinguished by its smaller size and a number of morphological characteristics, as sometimes happens with the color of her nails are not easily identifiable at first sight.
