Caravaca de la Cruz materializes the preliminary phase to enter the network of Smart Tourist Destinations in Spain (15/09/2020)

The adhesion -at this moment of impact of the Covid-19 for the tourist sector- supposes a bet of the Caravacan City Council to differentiate the municipality, modernize its commercialization and improve its positioning as a safe inland destinationThis has been the main point addressed in the last meeting of the Councilor for Tourism with the director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia (ITREM), a proposal that will be taken to the Plenary of the Municipal CorporationThe base document for the development of this comprehensive strategy has been prepared by the SEGITTUR state company, dependent on the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Government of SpainThe City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz materializes the first steps to be part of the network of Smart Tourist Destinations in Spain and will take this proposal to the Plenary of the Municipal Corporation.This is an initiative promoted by the state company SEGITTUR, dependent on the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Government of Spain, with the support of the Tourism Council of the Autonomous Community.This has been the main point addressed in the last meeting that the Councilor responsible for Tourism, José Carlos Gómez, has held with the general director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia (ITREM) Juan Francisco Martínez Carrasco.

Department of Tourism and the Tourism Institute, SEGITTUR has already prepared the basic working document for the development of this project.

It highlights that "the proposal is structured around a key element that will help differentiate Caravaca de la Cruz from other competing destinations and will favor the improvement of its positioning in the national and international tourist sphere." ?Adherence, at this moment of impact of the Covid-19 in the tourism sector, supposes the commitment of the City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz to renew and invest in different tools that make it possible to know the updated offer of the sector, favor the management of reservations and purchase, ensure safe mobility and warn the local population and future visitors of the new sanitary measures."The implementation of the Smart Tourist Destination (DTI) management model in the municipality will mean a comprehensive strategy to increase competitiveness through a better use of its resources, as well as the identification and creation of others that generate new opportunities", as reported by the mayor José Carlos Gómez, also pointing out that "the final objectives are to support a sector that is of vital importance for a municipality with the projection and potential of Caravaca de la Cruz, improving the quality of experience of the tourists and the residents themselves.

"Specific lines to accelerate the recovery of the destination, both in the short and medium term, focus on areas such as economic recovery and employment, health security, marketing and post-COVID-19 communication, adaptation of the product or resources and public-private cooperation, among other aspects.The role of municipalities is fundamental to promote smart and safe tourism, and they are protagonists in the relaunch of a key sector, both for their economic weight and for their contribution to social and territorial cohesion.As defined by the Ministry itself in the proposal commissioned by the Caracas Council, "an intelligent tourist destination is an innovative space, consolidated on a cutting-edge technological infrastructure; which guarantees the sustainable development of the territory; promotes universal accessibility; facilitates interaction and integration of the visitor with the environment and increases the quality of their experience in the destination and improves the quality of life of the residents ".In recent years, Spain has been the pioneer country in the 'Smart Tourist Destination' model and has great worldwide recognition from public entities and the private sector, with more and more destinations that are betting on this development model tourist.

?The Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for the conversion of Caravaca de la Cruz into a 'Smart Tourist Destination' has an economic cost of 44,385 euros, with an approximate execution period of four months and a development of the different actions within a period of 3 to 5 years.

Of the total amount, 29,547.68 euros would be national funds, in the form of payment in kind with working days of SEGITTUR technicians dedicated to the project.

The remaining amount will be provided by the City Council.SEGITTURSEGITTUR contributes to the development, modernization and maintenance of the tourism industry.

Spread, promote and implement in national and international tourism markets.The State Mercantile Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies is a company wholly owned by the General State Administration, supervised by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, which, through the State Secretariat for Tourism , is responsible for promoting innovation (R + D + i) in the Spanish tourism sector, both in the public and private sectors.
