La Vera Cruz, the Caravaca shield against Covid-19 (24/04/2020)

During this time of pandemic different signs are being made to ask God for the sick, for the deceased and for all the consequences that this pandemic caused by the Covid-19 is causing.

For a few weeks, the rector of the Vera Cruz de Caravaca sanctuary, Emilio Sánchez, performs the blessing with the Lignum Crucis, from the sanctuary to the four cardinal points.

A blessing that takes place in Caravaca twice a year: on May 5, when Vera Cruz returns in procession to her sanctuary after the patron saint festivities held in her honor; and on September 14, at the Feast of the Exaltation of Vera Cruz.An initiative that emerged in March and that takes place every Friday at 12:00.

"We have everything ready so that, when the bells of the sanctuary clock ring, the blessing begins from the Chapel of the Conjuring (located above the basilica)." The rector remembers that the spell is not something esoteric, it is a special prayer, in which the priest rebukes the pandemic "so that God ends it and can return everything to normality." From their homes, Caravaqueños join this prayer every Friday in praying the Creed and even, according to the rector, "there are those who say that, thanks to the Holy Cross, Caravaca has been one of the least infected populations in the Region of Murcia".From May 1 to 5, Caravaca would have celebrated, as is tradition, the patron saint festivals of Moors, Christians and Wine Horses, in honor of the Santísima and Vera Cruz.

Although the festivities have been suspended this year due to the pandemic, the intention is that the caravaqueños are close to their patron saint, and for this purpose, on these days, the 12:00 noon mass will be broadcast on local television, each faithful time from a temple.

On May 1, the mass will reach homes from the sanctuary basilica of the Vera Cruz, remembering the offering of flowers that morning is usually made to the patron saint; "On that day, the flowers of the parties will arrive at the sanctuary, representing all the Caravaqueños," explains the rector.

On May 2, the "Vera Cruz Appearance Mass" is celebrated,This year it will be from the parish of La Purísima Concepción, which is the closest to the Templete, where it is usually celebrated every year.

On Caravaca's big day, May 3, the day of the Invention of the Cross, Caravaqueños will be able to follow the Mass from the parish of El Salvador.

Remembering the "Cross of the handicapped" (the visit that the Holy Relic makes to the houses of the sick and handicapped during the festivities) and the rain of flower petals that the patron saint receives when she arrives at the convent of Santa Clara, the mass on the 4th It will be broadcast from the convent church of the Poor Clares.

These special days will end on May 5 with the celebration from the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, convent of the Discalced Carmelites.

In addition, on the afternoon of the 5th, at 5:00 pm, the blessing will be made with the Vera Cruz,of the city of Caravaca and its districts.

"The intention is that everyone can participate, even indirectly; it will be painful, because it will be the first time that these Vera Cruz celebrations are held without the faithful," concludes Emilio Sánchez.
