The City Council meets with the representative of the family that owns the House of San Juan de la Cruz to face its rehabilitation (17/12/2019)

From the Department of Urban Planning a Rehabilitation Plan for the Historic District has been launched and execution orders related to different properties have been sent

The mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Francisco García, together with the Councilor for Urban Planning, Mónica Sánchez, has held a meeting with the representative of the family that owns the property traditionally known as the 'House of San Juan de la Cruz' to face its rehabilitation.

In this regard, the mayor has reported that "from the Department of Urban Planning it is a priority to advance the care and revitalization of the old town and therefore, from the first day it has worked and important steps have been taken with facts and an active attitude ".

"In addition to the 'Housing Rehabilitation Plan of the Historic District' already underway, different requirements or execution orders have been notified to buildings that are in a poor state of preservation, which include the House of San Juan de la Cruz , for which we have received the total predisposition of their owners to act and collaborate ", as José Francisco García has valued, after the meetings held with the family representative, Alfonso de Zulueta.

"We are very grateful to the visit and the result of the recent meetings, because it is an issue that affects our historical heritage and that has been paralyzed for a long time, an aggravated problem in recent years with the progress of the deterioration and the consequent perimeter fencing of the property, "said the mayor.

In the Templete Square there is the building known as 'Casa de San Juan de la Cruz', since the popular tradition indicates from an ancient age that the Carmelite mystic lived there in one of his rooms in Caravaca, as a place where he previously settled the Convent of Discalced Carmelite Friars while the final was built.

"It is a traditional building, ground floor, first and false, which is fenced by occasional landslides on public roads, so we decided to act and we already have the support and involvement of the owners," said the councilor Urban Planning, Mónica Sánchez, who recalled that it is located in an environment of Cultural Interest.

Thus, as established by the Law on Land and Urban Rehabilitation, the right to ownership of the land includes the obligation to keep them in legal conditions of safety, health, accessibility and public ornamentation.

Alfonso de Zulueta y Sanchiz, Pereda-Vivanco y Armada, count Santa Ana de las Torres, has moved to Caravaca and has also held meetings with Carmelite Fathers, the Brotherhood of Vera Cruz, as well as with the recently created Association of San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesus in Caravaca.

In the requirements sent by the City Council, the owners are informed of the obligation to keep the building in good condition, both for security and for public decoration;

Depending on the situation of each property, the deadlines for carrying out the necessary works can vary between two and six months.

In the open file a list of the works to be carried out and the estimated budget for them have been incorporated, in the case that the different owners did not comply with the execution order.
