Fernando López Miras attends the celebrations in honor of the Santísima y Vera Cruz de Caravaca (02/05/2018)

The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, attended the festivities today in honor of the Santísima y Vera Cruz de Caravaca, and specifically the race of the Caballos del Vino, a celebration that, in the opinion of the president, "must be a Heritage Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and that is what we are working on so that this declaration can be produced by UNESCO ".

"Today is a big day for the Region of Murcia," said the president, who stressed that "this is a unique celebration in the world that all the citizens of the region can feel very proud of, and we are encouraging that it be known internationally" .

The Caballos del Vino are declared of International Tourist Interest.

In addition, in 2011 the Governing Council approved the declaration of this festival as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The race of the horses is celebrated today in the slope that goes up to the castle-sanctuary of Caravaca de la Cruz, a municipality immersed in the celebrations of the Santísima and Vera Cruz.

This race involves around 60 clubs and with it a tradition that dates back to around 1250, when Granada was besieged by the castle that since 1231 kept the relic of the Cross.

Then, a group of templarios managed to break the siege, to introduce with their horses panniers full of wine and to save the town to die by the poisoned water with which the enemies had contaminated the cisterns.
