Cozumel authorities contacted the City and the Confraternity of the Vera Cruz to make known the devotion and the close ties that the population has with the patron saint of Caravaca.

Specifically, its mayor, Aurelio Joaquin Omar, told the mayor, Domingo Aranda, his hope that both cities forging links through a partnership with the aim of promoting tourism and trade relations.

The origin Cozumel links with the Cross of Caravaca is on the discovery of three replicas on the Spanish ship "Matancero" which ran aground and disappeared into one of the reefs off its coast in 1741 and was found in 1956.

From that discovery, the patron saint of Caravaca is considered protective against hurricanes and winds threaten the island every year.
