The City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz, in collaboration with the concessionary company of the municipal waste collection and cleaning service Entorno Urbano y Medio Ambiente SL, has launched a campaign, financed by Ecoembes, to improve the rates of recycling of packaging light of Caravaca de la Cruz, using the collection technique called 'door to door'.

The first phase of the campaign began this week with the distribution of 200 yellow containers, for light containers, cans and bricks, in the homes of the residential neighborhood of 'Los Juncos', an area selected to be carried out on a pilot basis This collection door to door.

"On Wednesdays, from 10.00 pm, the neighbors will remove the yellow container in a traditional container for organic waste, after a period of one month we will evaluate the results obtained in order to expand the campaign progressively to more areas of the municipality, "as reported by the mayor in charge of the area of Environment, Enrique Fuentes.

The mayor has asked for the collaboration of neighbors in this campaign to promote recycling, whose mission is to contribute to compliance with the sustainability objectives set by the European Union.

For this, as pointed out by José Moreno, "it is necessary to actively involve all the agents that participate in the recycling chain: citizens, administrations and public and private companies, thus advancing towards a true circular economy based on a key concept : waste is not waste but resources. "

In this regard, the mayor also recalled that the recycling of packaging brings considerable environmental benefits in terms of saving raw materials, energy, water and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and, in addition, is an activity that contributes to economic development and social of our country through the generation of employment and industrial fabric.

HORECA Project

Parallel to this campaign, the non-profit environmental organization that promotes sustainability through the recycling of domestic packaging in Spain, Ecoembes, in collaboration with the City of Caravaca de la Cruz and Entorno Urbano y Medio Ambiente SL, has activated another campaign in Caravaca de la Cruz within the HORECA Canal project (hotels, restaurants and catering services).

To date there are 25 establishments that have already joined this campaign and have received a bucket and litter bins for light packaging.

In addition, different reference materials have been provided with all the detailed information on recycling and an 'Ecohostelero' seal has been delivered to each location, which certifies their participation in the initiative.

Within the framework of this campaign, 15 yellow containers, of lateral load and 3,500 L, will also be installed in areas close to the catering establishments.

The volume of waste generated in the HORECA Canal establishments is quite high and, therefore, this project is launched with the aim of covering the needs of these establishments in terms of recycling.

Objectives for selective collection

The European Union wants to accelerate the selective collection of urban solid waste to promote better recovery.

To do this, the European Parliament and the Council have reached a principle of agreement to assume new targets for recycling, more ambitious, more responsible and that must be approved in the first quarter of 2018.

The purpose is that the recycling of urban solid waste will be 55% by 2025. From then on, the proposal is to raise it to 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035. Likewise, in the latter term the percentage of urban garbage that goes to landfills should represent only 10% of the total.

This year 2017, a total of 248,740 kilograms of light packaging was collected in Caravaca de la Cruz, obtaining an average of 9.70 kg / inhabitants / year, increasing the data of 2016 by 11,040 kg. Each time it is closer to the average figure of the Region that is around 10 kg / inhabitants / year, but there is still a way to go to achieve the objectives set by Europe.

At the same time that data are improving in terms of kilos per inhabitant in Caravaca, it is also clear from the statistics made by Ecoembes of the service, that the percentage of improper products that appear in yellow containers has increased since 2015, tending consolidated data of a percentage of 16.80% in 2015, 17.90% in 2016 and 22% in 2017. This data prompts to take measures aimed at raising awareness and knowledge of the waste that can be deposited in this yellow container, insisting that only packaging waste light, cans and bricks are those that can be deposited in this container.
