Caravaca promotes the consumption of Segureño lamb and shows the social and economic importance of the livestock sector (03/10/2017)

The second edition of the Ovino Segureño and Extensive Livestock Fair, organized by the City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz, will be held on October 5, 6 and 7, with tasting and sale of gastronomic products, conferences, recipes, recognitions to the Rural Woman of the Year and the Pastor of the Year, as well as educational activities aimed at schoolchildren.

"The main objective of this event is the recognition and promotion of the lamb of Segureño, emphasizing the great potential that this breed has as one of our great gastronomic jewels", as has advanced the caravaqueño mayor, Jose Moreno, who has presented in Murcia the program of the fair, along with the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Francisco Jódar, and the Councilor for Agriculture and Environment, Enrique Fuentes.

The activities will take place in Salones Castillo de la Cruz and in an enclosed tent, where there will be exhibitions of native breeds of sheep Segureño, Celtiberian goat and sheep montesina, these last two with special protection for being in danger of extinction.

In the exhibition of gastronomy, in addition to tasting the Segureño lamb, recognized with the Protected Origin Indication (PGI), will participate the designations of origin Murcia Bullas Wines, Murcia Cheese and Calasparra Rice, along with oils, sausages and other products typical of the Region.

During the day of Thursday, October 5, guided tours of schoolchildren will be carried out with the purpose of transmitting the economic, social and environmental contribution of the livestock sector and its importance to fix the population in rural areas.

At 9:00 pm, a Spanish wine will be held by the Bullas DOP.

On Friday, October 6, in the morning, the school visits will continue and in the afternoon, a tasting of oils from the Region of Murcia (7.00 pm) and the conference 'Nuevos cortes en el Cordero Segureño' (20.00 hours) , which will include, among other aspects, new ways of presenting the product in order to adapt it to the current demands of the consumers and to promote their consumption.

On Saturday, October 7th, at 11:00 am, the Animeros of Caravaca de la Cruz will perform and the contest of lamb dishes will be held Segureño, with the collaboration of the Association of Amas of Caravaca de la Cruz, and the awards ceremony of the drawing contest and writing convened among schoolchildren.

At 12.00 hours the recognitions will be granted to the 'Rural Woman' and 'Shepherd of the Year' and, finally and by way of closure, a tasting will be held by the PGP Cordero Segureño.

The Segureña sheep breed, in its varieties Blanca and Rubisca, currently has about one and a half million heads in its natural distribution area, comprising 144 municipalities of Granada, Almería, Jaén, Albacete and Murcia.

In the Region of the Northwest Murcia is where most of the production and commercialization of the Segureño lamb of the Region of Murcia is concentrated.
