The Community gathers in Caravaca de la Cruz the best pieces of the Renaissance in the Region in the exhibition SIGNUM' (12/07/2017)

It shows the partial reconstruction of the courtyard of the castle of Vélez Blanco, with original and unpublished materials, and the compilation of the ten works that are conserved of Hernando de Llanos

The Autonomous Community, together with the Foundation Camino de la Cruz, organizes the exhibition 'SIGNUM.

The glory of the Renaissance in the Kingdom of Murcia ', which will open on Monday, June 17, in the Old Church of the Company of Jesus de Caravaca de la Cruz on the occasion of the Jubilee Year 2017 and that can be visited until 1 December.

'SIGNUM' gathers 65 works from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, pieces of goldsmithery and architecture and texts.

Javier Celdrán, "we will expose some of the best preserved jewels of the Renaissance in our Region, in a project that will become one of the great cultural events of the season in Spain, both by Its artistic and historical importance as by its singularity, being the first time that this period is approached in a specific territory.

He also recalled that Caravaca de la Cruz was a key stage of the Renaissance in the ancient Kingdom of Murcia.

Celdrán stated that "this project is a centerpiece of activities organized with the aim of promoting the Jubilee Year and the Region of Murcia as a destination not only for religious tourism but also for cultural, gastronomic and sporting purposes, thus showing the richness of experiences Offers the Community ".

Some of the works that will be exhibited have been provided by the Prado, San Pío V, Valencia, Fine Arts and Archaeological museums of Murcia, as well as by the dioceses of Almería, Albacete, Orihuela-Alicante and Cartagena and by collections Private partnerships.

Javier Celdrán stressed that the Renaissance in the old Kingdom of Murcia was "a moment of great splendor in Spanish art".

Outstanding works

With 'SIGNUM' will be announced the wealth of one of the great historical-artistic moments of Spain, through figures such as Hernando de Llanos, Jerónimo Quijano, Pedro Fajardo (Marques de los Vélez), Jacobo and Francisco Florentín or Pedro Fernández .

Artists such as Alonso de Monreal, Juan de Vitoria or Jerónimo de Córdoba, whose works are less well-known by the general public, will also be rediscovered.

Thus, Quijano was the author of one of the bodies of the Tower, the Chapel of Junterones, the Sacristy or the Annunciation of the Cathedral of Murcia, and participated in important works in Caravaca, Jumilla and Lorca.

Likewise, the painter Hernando de Llanos, who has important pieces in the Cathedral of Murcia and the Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz de Caravaca will meet for the first time the ten works that are preserved.

Among them, "the six tables painted in the sixteenth century on the Vera Cruz are exhibited, a magnificent example of the great religious works that are part of the heritage of the Region."

The pieces, added the counselor, "have been restored and displayed in all their splendor thanks to public-private collaboration, the Santander Foundation and Banco Santander and the supervision of the Regional Restoration Center."

The sample includes two very unique elements.

The first refers to when the courtyard of the castle of Vélez Blanco (part of the old Kingdom of Murcia) was sold, dismantled and taken to the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

So for 'SIGNUM' have been reconstructed some parts and you will be able to see two sculptures of the unpublished patio and the brocal of well.

On the other hand, the exhibition 'La Sagrada Familia' by Pedro Fernández de Murcia, known as 'pseudobramantino' (for being confused with Bramantino), follower of Leonardo da Vinci and master of the Renaissance in Italy.

In addition, the Christ of Don Juan de Austria, an anonymous ivory carving donated to the Church of Santa Maria de Cartagena, will be displayed;

The altarpiece of San Nicolás de Cehegín, by Alonso de Monreal;

Part of the library of Bishop Almeyda, with first editions of Durer, Vasari or Matteo de Pasti;

The fabrics of Lorca, and unpublished masterpieces, such as the Piedad de Juan de Vitoria, belonging to a private collection.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment explained that "a wide catalog of the exhibition will be prepared, which will bring the visitor closer to the reality of the time, and a program that will be disseminated in all educational centers in the Region and which will give Know and promote the interest of young people in art and history, an important didactic work in addition to that usually done from regional museums.

The Camino de la Cruz Foundation is made up of the Community, the Caravaca City Council, the Diocese of Cartagena and the Confraternity of the Santísima and Vera Cruz, as well as the Corporations Salzillo, Desserts and Sweets Reina, Limcamar, Hefame, El Pozo , Estrella de Levante, Caixabank and San Antonio University Foundation (Ucam).

'SIGNUM' is the second major exhibition to be held on the occasion of the Jubilee Year, the first one, 'Salzillo and Caravaca de la Cruz', also organized by the Camino de la Cruz Foundation in collaboration with Cajamurcia Foundation, received almost 25,000 visitors.

Likewise, Celdrán recalled that "the itinerant exhibition 'Cruces de Caravaca' is taking the art of the creators of the Region to different municipalities."

The Minister noted that "the wide program of the Jubilee Year, consisting of a hundred activities, seeks to offer cultural and leisure alternatives to the pilgrims who visit during this Region in 2017, going beyond the religious aspect."
