[The School of Shepherds of the Murcia Region, based in Archivel, starts up in March with about a dozen courses until the end of the year (20/01/2021)

| The training offer is the result of the collaboration between the Autonomous Community, the Caravaca City Council and the National Association of Segureño Ovino Breeders | The aim of the school is to promote the rural environment, training new professionals and consolidating existing ones with the help of the Specialized Center for Agricultural and Livestock Professional Training.

This space will be a center for the study and dissemination of the pastoral culture of the safe sheep breed within a framework of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

"Its objectives are to dignify and highlight the values ??of environmental sustainability of the livestock activity with a clear commitment to professionalism and quality".

"New professionals will be consolidated and trained, something that also contributes to fixing the population and creating employment among young people who want to bet on an opportunity linked to the field," he indicated.

In this way, Archivel will be a reference in the Region with a pioneering project that has offered good results in other communities such as Andalusia, the Canary Islands or the Basque Country.

Recently the training plan was finalized with the mayor in a meeting with the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, Antonio Luengo and the president of the National Association of Sheep Segureà ± o (ANCOS), Jos� Puntas, in which the councilors of Agriculture, Livestock and Pedan�as, Jos� Antonio Garc�a, and of Employment and Environment, Ana Bel�n Martï¿ also participated.

The School of Shepherds has as a general objective the study and dissemination of the pastoral culture of the safe sheep breed within a framework of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Specific objectives include promoting and coordinating training activities, encouraging the diversification of this activity and the incorporation of young people and women, as well as highlighting pastoralism and the figure of the shepherd, in addition ¿½s to differentiate quality products, obtain technical-economic, social and environmental data from livestock farms, transfer, and disseminate results.

Training Offer The Autonomous Community has already opened the registration period for the first training courses, which will begin to be taught next March, subsidized by measure 1 of the Rural Development Program 2014-2020.

The first course scheduled is 'Ruminant animal welfare (sheep / goats)', with a duration of 25 theoretical and practical hours, it will be developed on days 1, 2, 8, March 9, 15 and 16.

Among its purposes stands out the need to teach the benefits of using adequate procedures to manage the different livestock species and instruct them on the legally established criteria, to improve animal welfare and the quality of the final product obtained from animals, within which mark the regulations.

It seeks to provide current legislative compliance to companies and personnel that handle animals in relation to animal welfare, as well as to facilitate training to adapt animal welfare to legislative requirements.

In April, the course on the productive and reproductive management of sheep / goats has been scheduled; in May on initiation to beekeeping; in June on traceability and records in livestock production; in July on goat sheep health; in September, training will be given on the handling and application of biocides in livestock facilities; in October on animals and facilities; in November, feeding and ethology in sheep / goats; and finally in December on artisanal elaboration of goat cheese.

Those interested in taking these courses must fill out a form with their data and send it by email to the CIFEA of Lorca (cifealorcaarm.es) or to the School of Shepherds of the Region of Murcia.

The School of Shepherds was built in 2015 in the old schools of the Archivel district, with financing of 160,000 euros from the European agricultural funds for rural development EAFRD.

The building has an administrative part, which is also the headquarters of the association that groups together the Segureño sheep breeders of the Region, where the different aids are managed, and with a training room .
