01/19/2021.

The Fiesta de las Cuadrillas de Barranda will not fill the streets of this district of Caravaca de la Cruz with music and dance on the last Sunday in January.

The mayor of the municipality, Jos Francisco Garca, and the president of the Aguilanderos de Barranda, Carlos Manuel Salcedo, have participated in an appearance in the room dedicated to 'To Juan Rita' of the Museum of Music tnica-Coleccin Carlos Blanco Fadol, to make official the suspension of this meeting of traditional music, one of the oldest and most massive of those held in Spain.

Also present were the Councilor for Culture and Celebrations, Juan Manuel de Len, and the pediatrician, Patrocinio Snchez.

"The COVID-19 pandemic, which has marked a before and after in our lives and in the way we interact since March of last year, forces for obvious health reasons to suspend the edition of the year or 2021 of this beloved cultural manifestation, which would have reached its number 43 on Sunday, January 31, "said the mayor, who stressed that," although right now the absolute priority is to stop contagion and shorten this difficult situation, we cannot fail to express our support and memory of a manifestation that is culture in capital letters, that is part of our essence and roots and that every year brings together thousands of people in its streets and being, in addition, a dynamic element of the economy of this area ".

Jos Francisco Garca recalled that the Fiesta de las Cuadrillas has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with immaterial character of the Murcia Region since 2010 and as a Fiesta de National Tourist Interest since 2011, in recognition of its cultural, anthropological and social values.

Likewise, Garca has read the Mayor's Party, which includes this historical suspension and the support for the entire town of Barranda and all the participants in this party.

For his part, the president of the Aguilanderos, Carlos Manuel Salcedo, stated that "the next 29, 30 and 31 January should be a few days to celebrate the joy and the reunion of friends among music , dances, talks and performances but, as might be expected, what is responsible and sensible is not to carry out any activity given the health situation in which we find ourselves ".

Salcedo has said that "it was a totally predictable decision but it hurts us anyway, not only for the most obvious reasons from an emotional, cultural and festive point of view, but also because we know it is an important event for the revitalization and development of Barranda, the municipality and neighboring territories: shops, hospitality, hotels, rural houses, etc., for which it represents an important economic relief ".

Both the mayor and the president of the Aguilanderos de Barranda have had words of affection for all the musicians, dancers, professionals, collaborators who work so that the Fiesta de las Cuadrillas is held with the quality and guarantees they deserve.

"We would like to send our affection to those families and friends who have lost someone in these months, but especially those of Fernando Navarrete, Policarpo lvarez 'Poli', 'To Juan Rita' or Miguel 'de los Cantos', all of them squads and friends who have left us a great void ", declared Carlos Salcedo.

An encounter that was born in 1979 The Fiesta de las Cuadrillas de Barranda, which emerged in 1979 within the patron saint festivities of the Virgen de la Candelaria to vindicate and safeguard the legacy linked to peasant culture, has become a classic among popular festivals of the area and one of the main and oldest manifestations of traditional music of how many are celebrated in Spain.

For the third time in its history they are not celebrated, the previous two as a result of a snowstorm.

On the last Sunday in January, this district of Caravaca de la Cruz becomes the destination of thousands of people who shelter gangs, rounds and bands from different towns in Murcia and other provinces, with the Aguilanderos de Barranda as hosts.

Musical groups and the public merge in the streets, which become a large open-air stage in which a varied sample of popular culture music and dance is offered.
