Albacara, the literary contest that was born in the caramel caravan (23/09/2019)

The writings to participate in the Albacara 2019 prizes can now be submitted. The event, organized by the City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz with the collaboration of the Barefoot Carmelites of the municipality and the sponsorship of the Gollarín publishing house and the Reina Desserts Group, has three different forms of participation and offers prizes ranging from 75 to 3,500 euros.

Last year, this event, with 46 years of history and 37 editions, incorporated two new categories, in addition to the traditional awards.

Currently, it has the children and youth call "Mandarin School Award", in tribute to the work of Miguel Espinosa caravaqueño;

and two modalities for people over 18 years of age: the "Ciudad de la Cruz narrative prize", in recognition of the caravaqueño writer Gregorio Javier and the "San Juan de la Cruz mystical poetry prize", in honor of the mystical mystique and its connection with the city.

This year, in addition, the last two modalities acquire international character, as long as the works presented are original and written in Spanish.

Those who wish to participate in the contest must present their work, in quintuplicate, in the municipal library, before 9:00 p.m. on October 31 of this year.

The writings, which must be original and unpublished, may be submitted in person or by mail, provided that a date of the same or earlier than the deadline appears on your postmark.

The bases of the call are available for consultation on the website www.caravaca.org and on the blog of the municipal library of Caravaca de la Cruz (bibliotecadecaravaca.org).

The awards ceremony will take place on December 14, 2019, coinciding with the feast of St. John of the Cross, patron of the Spanish poets, in the plenary hall of the Caravaqueño Town Hall.

The jury's decision will be made public during the first days of December on the website of the Caravaca de la Cruz City Council or in the local and regional media.

The winners of the different modalities will be notified personally of the result.

From the organization they warn that it will be essential that the winners go to the delivery to collect their prize, and if they reside outside of Spain, they formally delegate to someone who can pick it up.

San Juan de la Cruz and its connection to Caravaca

In seven occasions San Juan de la Cruz visited the city of Caravaca, one of them to found the convent of the Barefoot Carmelites, creators of this event.

The mystic's relationship with Caravaca is present in the commemorative plaque next to the house he inhabited and is preserved next to the Parish of the Purísima Concepción.

Also, in the sculpture that Rafael Pi made in 1986, on the occasion of the IV centenary of the foundation of the convent of Our Lady of Carmen in Caravaca, which presides over the square with his name, at the beginning of the Glorieta promenade and in front of the convent of the Carmelites

The Albacara prize, promoted by the Barefoot Carmelites, arises in 1972 with the intention of commemorating the figure of the mystic.

With him, the friars sought to honor the figure of the Saint and, at the same time, arouse interest in literature, promoting writing among young people and adolescents in the area.

Since then, there have been many people who, having premiered in the literary creation in this contest, are credited today as renowned writers and poets in the regional, national and even international.
