The hall of the old church of the Company of Jesus of Caravaca de la Cruz houses the exhibition 'Deus ex machina', by Santiago Ydáñez.

The exhibition will be held until June 30, with a parenthesis from April 6 to 20 for the events within the Holy Week that take place in this municipal area.

The opening hours are from 12.00 to 14.00 and from 5.00 to 7.00 pm and on Sundays in the morning.

The paintings exhibited in 'Deus ex machina' are part of Ydáñez's most recent production;

a series based on the revision of the Caravaggio and Ribera paintings, which take on a new significance through the large size of the paintings and also through dialogue with the pieces of religious imagery of their particular collection.

In them, Ydáñez moves away from the Baroque postulates opening a new expressionist vision, as explained by the artist himself during the opening of the exhibition, which was attended by the mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Moreno, and the counselor of Culture and Tourism, Miriam Guardiola.

'Deus ex machina' is curated by T20 Proyectos (Nacho Ruiz and Carolina Parra), responsible for the 'Signum' and 'Mystics' exhibitions, which could be admired in the same hall during the 2017 Jubilee Year and last year 2018. sample is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Autonomous Community, in collaboration with the City of Caravaca de la Cruz.

The axis of this exhibition project is the immense portrait of San Juan de la Cruz, which Ydáñez made for the exhibition 'Mystics.

Santa Teresa and San Juan de la Cruz, light in the Golden Age ', an amazing work whose dimensions are 14 meters high by 8 meters wide, being the largest canvas in Spain and probably in Europe, which the artist had the generosity to donate to Caravaca de la Cruz.

Santiago Ydañez, called by some art critics as 'the XXL painter', presents in this exhibition his particular interpretation through strokes and the use of color.

The artist from Jaén studied Fine Arts at the University of Granada and has carried out workshops, among others, with Juan Genovés, Alfonso Albacete, Nacho Criado, Fernando Castro Flórez and Mitsuo Miura.

He has received important distinctions and is currently one of the Spanish painters with the greatest international projection.

He obtained, among others, the ABC Painting Prize in 2002 and the Generation Painting Prize 2002 from Caja Madrid, the Scholarship of the School of Spain in Paris from the Ministry of Culture in 2001 and the Marcelino Botín Foundation Scholarship in 1998.

Santiago Ydáñez currently lives and works between Berlin and Granada.

His work is based on observation, inspired by the memories of childhood fused with his cultural concerns, his love of art history and literature.

His work deals with five main themes that he interprets and represents indistinctly.

The human condition represented through the face, animals, nature, religious desacralization and a last line of work influenced by its passage through Berlin, the aesthetic investigation of historical records.
