The town councils of Caravaca and Vélez Blanco initiate the signaling project of the 'Camino Real de los Vélez' (31/01/2019)

In order to start up the recovery project of the 'Camino Real de los Vélez', the City of Caravaca de la Cruz and Cajamar have signed a collaboration agreement, by which this entity provides 3,500 euros to start the works of beaconing .

"In this way, we will recover the old road, of about seventy kilometers, that communicated Velez Blanco and Caravaca de la Cruz, two towns with a close historical link," said the mayor, José Moreno, accompanied by the councilor of Urbanism and Works, Enrique Fuentes;

the institutional head of Cajamar, José Antonio Chumillas, and the director of the office in Caravaca de la Cruz, Juan Campos.

In March last year, the town councils of Caravaca de la Cruz and Vélez Blanco began to work on the recovery of the historic pilgrimage road that links both municipalities, drafting a project for their signage.

The 'Camino Real de los Vélez' begins in Vélez Blanco, an Almerian town with an important heritage that has shared historical and cultural ties with Caravaca de la Cruz over the years.

It was born with the vocation to be constituted as a tourist and pilgrimage route that allows to know the patrimonial, landscape and ethnographic heritage of the localities through which it runs, covering the territory of the autonomous communities of Murcia and Andalusia.

The route is divided into four stages: 'Vélez Blanco-Las Amohallas', 'Las Almohallas-Cuartel Forestry House of Periago', 'Cuartal Casa Forestal de Periago'- La Almudema' and 'La Almudema-Caravaca de la Cruz'.

During the journey, the walker or cyclist will have the opportunity to enjoy nature in a quiet way, as you will find areas of pine groves, extensive rainfed crops, wadis, villages and farmhouses.

The part of the road that runs through the municipality of Caravaca passes through La Encarnación, Campo Coy, La Cañada del Hambre, Casa del Chico and Casa Forestal de Periago.

Already in the municipality of Vélez Blanco, it crosses Cortijo de Guadalupe, Cortijo del Llano, Alcaide, Las Almohallas, Cortijo Casa Quemada, Cortijo del El Puerto and Cortijo Martilena.
