The third edition of the Fair of the Seguran Ovine and the Extensive Livestock of Caravaca starts with school visits (11/10/2018)

With the visits of schoolchildren from the municipality's educational centers, the third edition of the Segureño Ovine Fair and Extensive Livestock Fair has started.

The event, framed in the general program of activities of the Caravaca de la Cruz Fair, takes place until this Saturday, October 13, on Pedro Campos street, with an exhibition of indigenous races, conferences, tastings and a recipe contest.

In addition, awards will be given to the 'Pastor of the Year' and the 'Rural Woman', which this year have fallen to Luis Pérez García and Leoncia Martínez Martínez.

The mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Moreno;

the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Autonomous Community, Miguel Ángel del Amor, and the councilor who heads the Agriculture, Livestock and Environment areas in the Caravaqueño Consistory, Enrique Fuentes, who have moved to the fair coinciding with the school visits, have emphasized that the main objective of the same is the recognition and promotion of segureño lamb, focusing on the great potential of this breed as one of the great gastronomic gems of the area.

The Segura sheep breed has about one and a half million heads in its natural distribution area, which includes 144 municipalities in Granada, Almería, Jaén, Albacete and Murcia.

In the Northwest Region of Murcia is where most of the production and marketing of segureño lamb of the Region of Murcia is concentrated.

The extensive grazing livestock has played a fundamental role in the Northwest region and in the rest of the regions that constitute the habitat of the Segureño lamb.

The reason for the presence in this territory is mainly due to its high rusticity and high production levels.

The segureño lamb is included since 2011 within the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

Activities throughout the weekend

The events began today, Thursday, October 11, with guided tours of schoolchildren of the municipality, who have known the different breeds of segureño lamb and have participated in the workshops of 'Cencerros' and 'Beekeeping'.

At 20.00, the round table 'Problems of sheep meat and extensive livestock support' is held, with the participation of representatives of the sector, and at 9.00 pm, a wine of honor is offered by the Denomination of Origin Protected (DOP) Bullas.

Tomorrow, Friday, October 12, the events will begin at 7:00 pm with the conference 'Las cabañuelas and other beliefs about the influence of the moon on agriculture and livestock', by Secondary teacher José Fuentes Blanc.

It will be followed by an introductory talk to the wine tasting by Bodegas Carreño (DOP Bullas).

On Saturday, October 13, the fair will resume the activity with the traditional music of the Animeros de Caravaca and the Segureño Lamb Course Contest, in which components of the Association of Housewives of Caravaca de la Cruz will participate.

At 11.30 am, the awards ceremony of the drawing and painting school competition convened on the occasion of the fair will begin and recognition will be given to the 'Rural Woman' and 'Pastor of the Year'.

The closure will be carried out by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Cordero segureño, with a tasting of the products at 1:00 p.m.
