Caravaca celebrates the third Segureño Sheep Fair and Extensive Livestock from October 11 to 14 (01/10/2018)

At the closing of the fair the awards will be given to the 'Rural Woman' and the 'Pastor of the Year'

From the 11th to the 14th of October, the III Segureño Sheep Fair and the Extensive Livestock Fair will be held, an event that is part of the general program of events at the Caravaca de la Cruz Fair.

In this occasion, the programmed activities will be developed in the street Pedro Campos of the locality;

both in the headquarters of the Ceyt Abuceyt cave and in the tent that will be installed abroad.

The mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Moreno, and the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Autonomous Community, Miguel Ángel del Amor, accompanied by the councilor responsible for the areas of Agriculture, Livestock and Environment in the City of Caravaca, Enrique Fuentes, have announced the novelties of the fair, whose main objective is the recognition and promotion of lamb segureño, focusing on the great potential of the race as one of the great gastronomic gems of the area.

The mayor stressed "the economic importance for Caravaca de la Cruz and all the natural region extensive livestock and in particular, which provides us with the precious as exquisite lamb from the segureña and montesina breeds and kid of the White Celtiberian race, these last two protected by being in danger of extinction ".

"The segureña sheep also has a relevant environmental function for the maintenance of the ecosystem, caused by grazing, which is manifested in the reduction of shrubs and grasses, which minimize the risk of fire, and contributes to the preservation and diversification of the landscape ", has added.

The acts will begin on Thursday October 11 with guided tours of schoolchildren in the municipality, who can learn about the different breeds of segureño lamb and participate in the workshops of 'Cencerros' and 'Beekeeping'.

At 20.00, the round table 'Problems of sheep meat and extensive livestock support' will be held, with the participation of representatives of the sector, and at 9.00 pm, a wine of honor will be offered by the Denomination of Origin Protected (DOP) Bullas.

On Friday, October 12, the events will begin at 7:00 pm with the conference 'Las cabañuelas and other beliefs about the influence of the moon on agriculture and livestock', by Secondary teacher José Fuentes Blanc.

It will be followed by an introductory talk to the wine tasting by Bodegas Carreño (DOP Bullas).

On Saturday, October 13, the fair will resume the activity with the traditional music of the Animeros de Caravaca and the Segureño Lamb Course Contest, in which components of the Association of Housewives of Caravaca de la Cruz will participate.

At 11.30 am, the awards ceremony of the drawing and painting school competition convened on the occasion of the fair will begin and recognition will be given to the 'Rural Woman' and 'Pastor of the Year'.

The closure will be carried out by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Cordero segureño, with a tasting of the products at 1:00 p.m.

The segureña sheep breed, in its Blanca and Rubisca varieties, has about one and a half million heads in its natural distribution area, which includes 144 municipalities in Granada, Almería, Jaén, Albacete and Murcia.

In the Northwest Region of Murcia is where most of the production and marketing of segureño lamb of the Region of Murcia is concentrated.

The segureño lamb is the Spanish breed that has increased the most in recent decades.

Of the 1.5 million heads in Spain, 35 percent are located in the Region.

The sheep sector reaches a volume of business close to 80 million euros in the Region, with a census of 545,478 head of cattle and a total of 1,465 producers, which is three percent of the national total.
