The correspondence with what was his great love, and a constant inspiration to write his works, started in 1956 and lasted until 1981.

In the presentation-prologue of the book, Juan Espinosa, son of the writer and author of 'Miguel Espinosa, my father' (Comares), states that the work can be divided into three periods.

As for the first, which covers 1956 to 1972, it states: "Miguel Espinosa, twenty-eight years old, already has two families (wife and two children, mother and three sisters), when he meets Mercedes Rodríguez in 1954 , of twenty-two, from Segovia, coming to Murcia with the purpose of finishing his degree in Chemistry In 1956, in his conscience, any possibility of living in common goes through obtaining income that will allow him to support three families now. he must wait, then, for the fulfillment of such a condition, presented as realizable. "

The second period extends from 1973 to 1976, years in which will take place "two events of different nature, although interlinkable: a myocardial infarction, suffered by Espinosa in June 1974, and the appearance of 'School of mandarins ', the work of his life, months later. "

Finally, in the third period -1977 to 1981-, according to Juan Espinosa "life executes, with Miguel and Mercedes, one of those movements that are his own, a dialectical turn, we would say, understanding by dialectic the final recovery of something lost or destroyed in appearance, and, with regard to the events narrated in 1977 in 'Tríbada' [literary artifact where the writer gives an account of other loves, passions and disconcerts], Espinosa recovers Mercedes as the interlocutor and confidant of always, as a character Also, it is more: as co author of the book, whose pages include complete paragraphs of his letters ".
